Cubs Make Roster Move Announcements, DFA Top 30 Prospect

The Chicago Cubs have already undergone a lot of changes early in the season, and a new string of roster moves brought more change to the lineup.

In a post on Twitter/X, the Cubs announced that they have made a couple of roster moves. The Cubs optioned right-handed pitcher Gavin Hollowell to Triple-A, brought reliever Drew Pomeranz to the Major League roster, and transferred Justin Steele to the 60-day injured list.

The most prominent moves made by the Cubs was designating Gage Workman for assignment, and signing Nicky Lopez to a Major League contract.

Lopez returns to the Cubs after signing with the Cubs at the beginning of 2025. He was released on March 21, and a little over a month later, he returns to the Cubs roster, this time as a Major Leaguer.

Lopez was with the Los Angeles Angels for just five games, where he had only six at bats, and didn't have any hits, or walks. He returns to the Cubs as a bench bat, where he had a strong Spring Training. In Spring Training of 2025, Lopez had a .450 batting average, with a 1.092 OPS.

He replaces Workman, who is a 25-year-old infielder, who had struggled for the Cubs in 2025. Workman had a .214 batting average across 14 at bats, with just two RBI and a .553 OPS. He also had three errors at third base, and had just a .700 fielding percentage.

Workman is ranked as the Cubs 29th best prospect, and he now is designated for assignment, exposing him to be picked up by another team. The moves in the infield were the headliners from the Cubs roster moves, but the action in the bullpen is also worth monitoring.

Hollowell is coming off a solid outing, and Pomeranz hasn't pitched in the Major Leagues since 2021. It'll be an interesting experiment to see how well Pomeranz can pitch in his first Major League action in nearly four years.

The Cubs roster moves come before their final game against the Los Angeles Dodgers series, as the Cubs have a chance to win their second series over the former 2024 World Series champions.
