Cubs-Padres Trade Pitch Would Address Chicago's Bullpen Needs

The Chicago Cubs have been active all offseason, proving they are dedicated to getting better and addressing their desired needs. Chicago has already traded for stars like Kyle Tucker and Ryan Pressly from the Houston Astros to add a power-hitting outfielder and another piece to the bullpen.

However, there is still time to make moves, and Chicago's back end of the bullpen could still use some padding.

The Cubs had been rumored to be linked with the San Diego Padres starter Dylan Cease all off-season but were unable to figure out a trade that seemed likely.

In a recent trade rumor, the Padres might look to move off flamethrowing closer Robert Suarez, and Chicago would be a great fit for the 33-year-old who is coming off a career year where he posted a 2.77 ERA and 36 saves.

San Diego would likely need another arm in return, so the trade would send right-hander Nate Pearson and prospect Kevin Alcántara to the Padres in return for Suarez. Chicago acquired Pearson from the Toronto Blue Jays in the middle of last season, and Alcántara would give the Padres an MLB-ready outfielder after they lost All-Star Jurickson Profar to free agency. Pearson turned his season around after being acquired by the Cubs and is a good candidate to sell high while they're able.

Chicago's outfield is already set with Tucker patrolling right field, Pete Crow-Armstrong in center, and Ian Happ taking left field.

Pressly is slated to be the Cubs closer for 2025, but he was shaky with the Astros in 2024, only recording four saves, and was used mostly as a setup man. This deal would give Chicago a certified closer who fits in immediately.

If Chicago is serious about contending in the National League, they will need to make sure the closer role isn't an issue on a nightly basis.
