The Chicago Cubs have been active in the MLB rumor mill so far this offseason. While Jed Hoyer has yet to make any highly impactful free agency signings, the team is being viewed as a potential fit for quite a few names who could make the Cubs a World Series contender in 2026.
Kyle Tucker seems likely to be on his way out of town. That could still change, but there haven’t been many reasons for optimism regarding Chicago’s ability to re-sign him.
One big name that has been constantly connected to the Cubs this offseason has been star infielder Alex Bregman.
Last offseason, Chicago was heavily interested in Bregman. However, the Boston Red Sox ended up winning the free agency sweepstakes for him. This time around, the Cubs are hoping to find a different result.
Unfortunately, a new prediction has been shared for Bregman that Chicago fans will not like to hear.
ESPN’s David Schoenfield has predicted that Bregman will simply end up re-signing with the Red Sox. The Cubs are in the mix, but Boston is still the landing spot that many think will sign him.
Bregman is coming off of a solid season with the Red Sox in 2025. He played in 114 games, hitting 18 home runs to go along with 62 RBI. In addition, he produced a slash line of .273/.360/.462.
No one should give up on the idea of Chicago landing Bregman. Schoenfield’s prediction could very well end up becoming a reality, but the Cubs are still very much involved.
Expect to continue hearing a lot about Chicago in the MLB rumor mill. Hoyer and company do want to compete, but whether or not they’ll be willing to open up the checkbook to make that happen remains to be seen. Bregman would be a player worth paying a major contract to this offseason.
