The Chicago Cubs (33-21) are flying high, as they're 8-2 in their last 10 games and are three ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals (30-24) for first place in the NL Central. There's plenty of time for them to slide, but they have a chance to win their first division title since 2020, which was also their last playoff appearance.
This has been a much-needed momentum boost for a franchise that hasn't won a postseason game since its 2017 NLCS run. Players like center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong and left fielder Seiya Suzuki, who each lead the team with 14 homers, have been instrumental to its recent success.
However, Chicago is losing another important piece, via The Chicago Sun-Times' Maddie Lee.
"[Catcher] Miguel Amaya’s MRI results showed he’ll likely return in the 4-6 week range," she reported. Cubs manager Craig Counsell said that "means we're trying to get him back before the All-Star break.”
Amaya, who hasn't played since Saturday, is slashing .280/.313/.505 with four homers and 25 RBI across 27 games. The 26-year-old's injury interrupts his best year yet, as his career slash line is .236/.302/.382 through 197 games.

Chicago will also be without fellow catcher Carson Kelly (illness) against the Colorado Rockies (9-45) on Tuesday. The 30-year-old is slashing .301/.425/.612 with nine homers and 24 RBI across 32 games.
Third-stringer Reese McGuire, who is 2-for-7 with two solo homers thus far in the season, will start on Tuesday and hit ninth. The 30-year-old was 0-for-2 with a strikeout in Monday's 3-1 win over the Rockies.
