Since early on in the MLB offseason, the Chicago Cubs have once again been connected heavily to star free agent infielder Alex Bregman.
Bregman was a target for the Cubs last offseason. Unfortunately, they were unable to land him as he chose to sign with the Boston Red Sox instead. Chicago didn’t offer as good of a deal as the Red Sox did last time around.
This offseason, the Cubs seem to be one of the top potential destinations for Bregman once again.
Jed Hoyer and the Chicago front office have not been willing to spend big money in recent years. They have operated more like a small market team in free agency. Fans are hoping to see the organization break that trend this offseason.
With that being said, the Cubs have been given a major new prediction regarding Bregman’s free agency market.
USA Today’s Gabe Lacques has made his final prediction for where Bregman will sign. He believes that Chicago will end up getting a deal done with him.
Last season with Boston, Bregman ended up playing in 114 games. He hit 18 home runs, drove in 62 RBI, and slashed .273/.360/.462. Those numbers would look good in the Cubs’ lineup, especially with superstar outfielder Kyle Tucker expected to leave as a free agent.
Without Tucker, Chicago is obviously going to need help in the lineup. Losing a star bat is never easy to replace. Bregman would not be able to fully replace Tucker’s production, but he would certainly be able to help.
It will be interesting to see if the Cubs are willing to spend bigger to get Bregman this offseason. They clearly have a lot of interest in him, but whether that will be enough to sign him remains to be seen. Fans can only wait and see what happens.
