Cubs Reportedly 'Aggressive' in Pursuit for Another Starting Pitcher

The weather is not the only thing heating up as the calendar approaches a flip to July. The All-Star break, trade deadline, and the dog days of summer are all approaching and the Chicago Cubs need reinforcements. Shota Imanaga is returning to the rotation this week against the St. Louis Cardinals, but another starter is desperately needed to effectively replace the void left by Justin Steele.

According to insider Bruce Levine , it appears Jed Hoyer isn't wasting time in his efforts to add another starter. Levine notes that the Cubs could add a starter in the next seven to 10 days, stating "they're going for it, they're proactive."

The full soundbite from Levine is intriguing. No names are suggested, but it sounds like the addition of a "good, young, veteran pitcher" (sounds backwards but think a young starter with control and has pitched for a few seasons in MLB) is on the horizon. Names are purely speculative, but the fact the Cubs are really jumping on the market early is huge.

It appears that the Sandy Alcantara name was shot down by Levine, but maybe Mitch Keller, Zac Gallen, or even an off-the-wall name such as Joe Ryan could be in the mix.

In addition to a pitcher, Levine also hinted at the possibility of a right-handed hitting third baseman could be a part of a larger deal as well. Matt Shaw has sputtered again at the plate, and it appears the Cubs do not have the patience to let him figure it out on a daily basis as their starter. Adding another potential thumper in the lineup on a rental basis would make a lot of sense as well.

It's hot outside, but the hot stove may be even warmer than the temperature. Expect the Cubs to be hyperactive sooner than later on the trade front as they look to take a real swing at a World Series title in 2025.
