The Cubs are on the hunt for starting pitching at the deadline, and the Marlins may be the team to trade with them. They have two starting pitchers that could be on the trade block in Sandy Alcantara and Edward Cabrera. And according to Matt Cozzi, the Cubs have “checked in” on Edward Cabrera and have a scout at his start tonight against the Padres. Cabrera is a guy who has been on the Cubs’ radar for a while and is a real trade possibility.
By the time July 31st comes around, the Cubs are destined to have a few changes to their roster. The biggest change will hopefully come to their starting pitching. Cabrera, who is a starter for the Marlins, would be a great guy to target. Even on a below-average Marlins team, he has put together a solid season so far with a 3.50 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 87 1/3 innings. Cabrera features five pitches, which are all thrown pretty evenly. His curve and slider are by far his best stuff, as he has an 8 breaking run value, which puts him in the 94th percentile. He also has a pretty good-looking baseball savant page with elite fastball velocity and solid chase rate, whiff rate, and strikeout rate.
Hearing the Cubs have checked in with the Marlins on SP Edward Cabrera, who is available. Cubs have a scouting presence at Cabrera’s start right now.

Cabrera would be an excellent get for the Cubs to strengthen their starting rotation. They have been riddled with injuries over the year. Justin Steele is out for the entirety of the year , Shota Imanaga missed a good chunk of time, and Jameson Taillon has been on the IL since July 4th. These injuries have forced them to give Cade Horton a starting spot and pivot to bullpen games lately. Horton has been okay this year. He has pitched double the number of innings he did last year in the minors, and the bullpen games cannot carry on for much longer. Overall, if they could get Cabrera for a decent price, he would be well worth it and add quite some value to the rotation.
