Cubs Reportedly Interested in Pete Alonso Post-Winter Meetings

The Chicago Cubs appear to be one of the more active teams this winter after back-to-back 83-win seasons. First, it was the rumors about a potential Kyle Tucker trade that have fans holding on to the edge of their seats. Now, another major power bat appears to be a possibility for Chicago. Per MLB Insider Jon Heyman, the Cubs are one of the teams interested in the services of former New York Met 1B Pete Alonso

Alonso is likely to find a new home in 2025 after the Mets signed Juan Soto to a mega-contract before the Winter Meetings. After paying $765 million to Soto for 15 years, Alonso is likely donning different colors next season, though it is not impossible for him to return to Queens. The power-hitting first baseman had a down year by his standards in 2024, but is still a massive upgrade in the power department for a Cubs team that sorely needs it.

In 2024, Alonso swatted 34 home runs, his lowest total since 2021 when he had 37 long balls. That said, the body of work is evident for Alonso and his addition to a power-hungry Cubs lineup would be a massive upgrade. Another player with 4-to-5 WAR potential would also benefit the Cubs.

Whether Heyman's report is accurate or not remains to be seen. But, if Jed Hoyer is actively trying to improve the roster this aggressively, he's clearly feeling the heat under his seat as he enters the final season of his contract.
