Cubs Reveal Massive Update for Top Prospect Ahead of Season Opener

The Chicago Cubs are gearing up for their regular season opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Tokyo, Japan. That game is set to be played on March 18.

After a long offseason, the Cubs could not be more excited to get the season underway. They have made some key moves to re-tool the roster and also have some young players set to make their MLB debuts.

One of those young players happens to be the organization's top prospect, infielder Matt Shaw.

A new update has been provided about Shaw's status ahead of Chicago's season opener against the Dodgers in Japan.

According to a report from Patrick Mooney of The Athletic, Shaw is set to make the trip with the Cubs to Tokyo and will be in line to make his Major League debut.

"Matt Shaw will travel with the Cubs for the Tokyo Series roster, giving the organization’s top prospect the chance to make his major-league debut next week against the Dodgers."

There seems to be a good chance that Shaw could stick with the Major League squad moving forward as well. Chicago has a need at third base and he seems to be the best option to fill that hole.

During the 2024 minor league season in the Cubs' organization, Shaw ended up playing in 121 games. He hit 21 home runs to go along with 71 RBI while slashing .284/.379/.488.

Shaw's future in Chicago looks incredibly bright. It sure sounds like fans may get their first real look at him next week against the defending champion Dodgers.
