Cubs’ Seiya Suzuki Named NL Player of the Week

Through nine games, the Chicago Cubs are a game above .500 as they welcome the Tampa Bay Rays to town on Monday. However, there is recognition in order for Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki. The 27-year-old rookie was named NL Player of the Week on Monday.

Over the past week, Suzuki possessed a .412/.545/1.059 slashline with three home runs and an otherworldly 314 wRC+. Suzuki is quite literally one of the best players in baseball right now and he’s continuing to show it. His power has been impressive, but it’s his opposite field power that is most impressive.

Seiya’s first home run on the road was a power stroke to right-center field against the Pirates. The shot left the yard in the deepest part of the ballpark and was a no-doubter for the Cubs’ newest outfielder.

In addition, Suzuki showed his impressive plate discipline on Sunday in the team’s win over the Rockies. Suzuki took what he was given and poked a ball out to right field for his fourth home run of the season and third of the week.

Suzuki’s ability to take the ball the other way has been special early on in the 2022 campaign. He is showing that he is a professional hitter and can adapt to the offerings he receives at the plate. Plate discipline is something that a player doesn’t lose as the league adjusts to them. That said, if his patience continues, this won’t be the last time he earns league-wide recognition.

Seiya Suzuki has the chance to start a new week off on the right foot as the Cubs welcome the Rays to town. Monday’s game is the first of a seven-game homestand as the Cubs do battle with Tampa Bay for three games before welcoming Pittsburgh to town for four games this weekend.
