The Chicago Cubs are gearing up for an important four-game series with the rival St. Louis Cardinals beginning on Monday. Ahead of the series opener, the Cubs switched up the look of their bullpen. After a putrid outing on Sunday, RHP Nate Pearson has been optioned back to Triple-A Iowa. In his place, a familiar face returns.

The Cubs have selected the contract of RHP Michael Fulmer from Triple-A Iowa. The righty and former Cub will make his return to the bullpen.

Fulmer pitched for the Cubs in 2023, accumulating a 4.42 ERA over 58 appearances. The former Rookie of the Year had moments of brilliance, including an unbelievable performance in a walk-off win over the Chicago White Sox. Unfortunately, an elbow procedure following the 2023 season forced Fulmer to miss the entirety of the 2024 campaign.

Prior to the 2025 season, Fulmer received a non-roster invite to Spring Training from the Boston Red Sox, and ultimately made the team. However, one bad outing lead to his designation for assignment, and he elected free agency rather than reporting to Triple-A. Just days after, he inked a minor-league deal with the Cubs.

In 24.1 innings over 15 appearances with the Iowa Cubs, Fulmer pitched to a 2.96 ERA with a hold and a save. Fulmer has been really good, striking out 32 batters compared to just 11 walks. Perhaps the magic he found when he first moved to the bullpen in 2021 can he a worthy addition to the Cubs' pen.
