The Chicago Cubs have had a relatively quiet start to the MLB offseason. Of course, the recent reports of interest in Dylan Cease ended with the Cubs losing out on him to the defending American League champion Toronto Blue Jays.
Kyle Tucker is widely expected to be gone after just one season in Chicago. In fact, Tucker recently met with the Blue Jays as well.
While the Cubs’ fan base hasn’t had a whole lot to be excited about this offseason, that could change soon.
According to a report from insiders Sahadev Sharma and PJ Mooney, Chicago is showing “renewed interest” in free agent infielder Alex Bregman.
Fans will remember that the Cubs were heavily involved in the Bregman free agency sweepstakes last offseason. They came up short to the Boston Red Sox. Many believe that the Red Sox will end up re-signing Bregman when all is said and done this offseason as well.
Throughout the course of the 2025 MLB season in Boston, Bregman played in 114 games. He hit 18 home runs to go along with 62 RBI, while also slashing .273/.360/.462. Those numbers would be a welcome addition to a Chicago offense that is expected to be missing Tucker next season.
At 31 years old, Bregman still has plenty of good baseball left in the tank. He is likely searching for a lucrative multi-year deal. Whether or not the Cubs’ front office will be willing to get aggressive enough to get him or not remains to be seen.
All of that being said, Chicago is still focused primarily on adding another impact starting pitcher. Names like Michael King and Ranger Suarez have started trending surrounding the team. Either of those arms would be a great addition as well.
Expect to continue hearing more rumors and speculation about the Cubs in the coming days and weeks. It does sound like Jed Hoyer and company would like to make an impact move or two this offseason.
Will that move be for Bregman and a legitimate starting arm? Only time will tell, but fans shouldn’t give up hope just yet.
