The Chicago Cubs are adding more veterans to their spring training roster. This time, Brad Keller is joining the organization on a minor-league deal with an invitation to big-league camp.
As rotational depth for Triple-A Iowa, Keller could serve a valuable role during the 2025 season. His 5.44 ERA is nothing special, but it appears the Cubs see enough potential in him to want an extended look during camp.
Throughout his career, he has had many stumbles and a few signs of hope. Sometimes it takes the right team to unlock a player and the Cubs have a fairly good track record of doing so.
Prior to splitting time with the White Sox and Red Sox in 2024, Keller spent his entire career with the Kansas City Royals after debuting as a starting pitcher in 2018. If he can reclaim some of his decent form from his earlier years, the Cubs could add another quality arm to their depth.
With pitchers and catchers reporting on Feb. 9, it will be interesting to see who emerges from this wide-ranging group as a contributor in 2025. If Keller stumbles in camp, it's no harm to the Cubs' bottom line.
It never hurts to see if a pitcher can improve his game with the talent of this team's pitching infrastructure. With age on his side, Keller has the opportunity to develop further with the Cubs.
