Cubs' Team Effort Results in 3-2 Win Over Blue Jays

Due to multiple rain delays, the Chicago Cubs needed to dig through their bullpen to hold down Saturday's game. The stop-and-go affair, a 3-2 Cubs win over the Toronto Blue Jays, produced a potential closing option in Jorge Lopez.

Chicago's offense came through when needed thanks to the efforts of the hot-hitting Ian Happ and Michael Busch. After previous struggles, Happ has provided exactly what the Cubs need to chase down a playoff spot.

At 4.5 games back of the final National League wild-card standings, the Cubs are hanging around in the race. They'll need to go on a run if they want to avoid a long offseason pondering what could have been.

Tale of the Tape

Justin Steele made a brief appearance in Saturday's game. Though he lasted just two innings, he did his best before Mother Nature ended his day. It's safe to say the lefty will be fully rested by the time he makes his next start.

The Cubs opened the scoring in the bottom of the first thanks to Ian Happ's solo home run off Chris Bassitt.

The Cubs needed all hands on deck from their pitching staff to win Saturday's game. After the first rain delay, Nate Pearson took the mound with the added motivation of facing his former team.

Since joining the Cubs, Pearson has been a solid arm at Craig Counsell's disposal. He figures to be an intriguing bullpen option heading into the 2025 season.

The right-hander surrendered just one hit over two innings. Pearson's day ended after a tightrope act in the 4th inning. With the bases loaded, Pearson produced a strikeout and a flyout to keep Chicago's lead intact.

Then, Michael Busch cushioned the Cubs' lead.

Daulton Varsho's RBI bunt against Drew Smyly in the seventh inning got Toronto on the board. Strong outings from Tyson Miller and Porter Hodge helped the Cubs keep the Blue Jays' scoring to a minimum through most of the game.

With Hector Neris needing rest, Jorge Lopez took the ball in the ninth inning. A former All-Star closer with the Baltimore Orioles, the veteran is no stranger to high-leverage situations.

Addison Barger's leadoff homer left Lopez no more margin for error. Fortunately, he settled in by striking out the next three batters to secure a series win against the Blue Jays.

Takeaways

Rain or shine, the Cubs were prepared to play on Saturday. The bullpen continues to impress after a disastrous start to the season and the offense is clicking in a timely matter.

If the Cubs want to rely less on Hector Neris, it seems Jorge Lopez can answer the late-inning call.

There's still time for a run at the postseason if the Cubs can beat up on some subpar teams. With the Detroit Tigers and Miami Marlins on the upcoming schedule, the Cubs have no more excuses if things head south.
