Cubs Trade Garrett Cooper to Red Sox for Cash Considerations

The Chicago Cubs  reportedly traded Garrett Cooper to the Boston Red Sox on Saturday. The veteran joined the Cubs as a non-roster invitee to Spring Training. He along with Dominic Smith , were vying to make the club as Patrick Wisdom was injured and unavailable to start the season.

After making the club out of camp, Cooper posted solid numbers during his 12-game stint as a member of the Cubs. With Wisdom now healthy and active, the team apparently viewed Cooper as the odd man out.

In 37 plate appearances, Cooper posted a solid .270 average for a team that needed at-bats while managing a barrage of injuries to key contributors.

The Cubs parting ways with a player who was effective at the plate was a rather puzzling move. Regardless of Wisdom's return, Cooper still could play more than one position for a club that holds positional flexibility in high regard.

From the Red Sox perspective, Cooper is a perfect fit. Young first baseman Triston Casas is on the injured list with a rib issue and an unclear return timeline.

Cooper presents an obvious upgrade to the already incumbent Bobby Dalbec in the lineup and at first base. With Boston's record currently hanging around .500, Cooper could add an extra boost.

The Cubs pretty much got what they needed out of Cooper, a one-month rental to hold Wisdom's roster spot and provide some veteran experience on a young Cubs bench.
