Cubs Trade INF Zach McKinstry to Tigers for RHP Carlos Guzman
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

With a crowded infield at the MLB level, INF Zach McKinstry has been dealt to the Detroit Tigers for RHP Carlos Guzman.

The Chicago Cubs are tinkering their roster to become a final, 26-man group to begin the 2023 campaign. Amongst the flurry of moves to finalize said group, the Cubs have made a trade with the Detroit Tigers. The Cubs are sending INF Zach McKinstry to the Tigers for RHP Carlos Guzman.

McKinstry was acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers at the 2022 MLB trade deadline for RHP Chris Martin. After joining the Cubs, McKinstry slashed .206/.272/.361 with four home runs and 12 RBI in 47 games. Although he showed flashes in his short time with the Cubs, it wasn't enough for him to secure a spot on the Opening Day roster, ultimately leading to the move.

In return, the Cubs are acquiring Carlos Guzman. Guzman is a 24-year-old prospect who spent most of 2022 in High-A. In 25 appearances (23 starts), he posted a 9-6 record with a 4.16 ERA. In addition, the righty pitched a complete game in 106.0 innings of work. Although his numbers were solid, he only struck out 89 batters while walking 34.

Guzman might be a work in progress, but the Cubs must see something they like about the prospect. Perhaps they see him as another case study for the pitch lab. If the Cubs can turn him around, he could be a sneaky addition to their pipeline.
