Cubs Trade RHP Cory Abbott to Giants for Cash

The Cubs have been busy over the last 24 hours. On Wednesday, the team pulled the trigger and sent RHP Jesse Chavez back to Atlanta for LHP Sean Newcomb. In this instance with Abbott, it feels like a change of scenery scenario for the former second-round pick.

The Backstory

Abbott struggled in 2021 and those struggles have continued into 2022. This season, he possesses a 4.50 ERA in two starts and has only pitched six innings. Something seems to be off. In 2021, Abbott’s ERA was 5.91 and he failed to throw 100 innings in 19 starts at Triple-A Iowa. Despite the struggles, 2019 was a banner year for the righty. He had a strong 3.01 ERA in 26 starts. One consistent for Abbott has been his strikeout numbers. He had 166 and 130 strikeouts in 146.2 and 96.0 innings in 2019 and 2021, respectively.

Cory Abbott has limited MLB action, with most of it coming late in 2021 with the Cubs. However, he didn’t have much success outside of the minors.

Ideally, this move helps Abbott get a shot at the big leagues. Sometimes, players require a change of scenery to tap into their true potential. As Cubs fans, we saw that happen with Jake Arrieta, who just called it a career this past week. For Abbott’s sake, hopefully a respected organization like the Giants can help him get back on track.
