Cubs Unable to Complete Sweep Against Miami

The Chicago Cubs failed to finish a sweep against the Miami Marlins, dropping game 3 by a 3-1 score.

All four runs scored in the game came from solo home runs, with Marlins designated hitter Agustín Ramírez going deep in the fourth inning and outfielder Kyle Stowers sending two over the fence. The Cubs' lone run came from a blast off the bat of Seiya Suzuki, and he is now tied for the team lead in homers with Pete Crow-Armstrong (11).

Aside from Suzuki's swing, the offense was disappointing. The team only recorded five hits against a Marlins pitching staff with the second-worst collective ERA in baseball. They also let Miami starter Ryan Weathers, who made his season debut on Wednesday night, to go five innings and effectively shut down the Cubs' offense other than the homer.

The only real scoring chance the Cubs had came in the sixth inning after Weathers left the game. The Cubs squandered a bases loaded threat after Nico Hoerner struck out to end the frame. This was the only time the Cubs had a runner in scoring position all night.

On the pitching side, Jameson Taillon pitched well but gave up all three homers, and he is now leading MLB in home runs allowed with 13. It's a concerning trend since the right-hander only surrendered 21 long balls last year. Despite the damage, Taillon still made it through six innings, struck out seven hitters, and logged his fifth quality start this season.

The Cubs still won the series after Tuesday's unbelievable walk-off win in the ninth inning, but a sweep would have further solidified the Cubs' lead in the National League Central.
