The Chicago Cubs entered Sunday with an opportunity to win their sixth series in the month of April. However, Sunday Night Baseball seemingly favored the Philadelphia Phillies as Chicago's bats went stagnant.
It wasn't all bad for the Cubs. Not only did they pick up an important win on Friday to open the series, but they started the scoring on Sunday night. With two outs in the bottom of the second inning, Nico Hoerner whacked his fourth double of the season to give the Cubs a runner in scoring position. In the next at-bat, Pete Crow-Armstrong knocked his 10th double of the season, driving in Hoerner and giving the Cubs a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the third, the Phillies struck back. Bryson Stott ended up on third base with a triple, and Trea Turner singled to bring him home and tie the game. From there, however, both teams settled in and put zeroes on the scoreboard for the next six innings.
The Phillies came close to taking the lead in the ninth, with Nicholas Castellanos putting a charge into a ball. However, Ian Happ secured the out at the wall and sent the game to the bottom of the ninth. When the Cubs couldn't score, the game entered extra innings.

In the top of the 10th, the Phillies added a pair of runs. To start things off, Julian Merryweather walked back-to-back batters to load the bases. An Alec Bohm sacrifice fly scored Castellanos as the ghost runner from third. From there, the bases were loaded once again, and Vidal Brujan couldn't get Trea Turner at first base on a grounder, scoring a second run.
With a 3-1 lead, the Phillies sent the Cubs down quietly to finish off the victory.
An important positive note for the Cubs in the loss was the performance of starting pitcher Jameson Taillon. Not only did Taillon pitch 7.0 innings of really good baseball (five hits, one run, zero walks), but he also recorded his 1,000th career strikeout. Taillon only struck out two, but the right-hander had an incredible outing against a very good Phillies lineup. The Cubs walked away with a loss, but Taillon did his job and gave the team a good chance to win.
