Cubs will activate LHP Jose Quintana for Tuesday start against Pirates

Jose Quintana will return to the Chicago Cubs pitching rotation for the final week of the regular season.

As Jesse Rogers of ESPN reports, Chicago manager David Ross told reporters on Monday that the club will activate the 31-year-old left-hander off the injured list on Tuesday so that he can start that night against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Quintana missed the opening month of the pandemic-shortened season after he underwent surgery to repair a thumb injury on his left hand that he suffered ahead of July summer camp training sessions when he was washing dishes. He made his season debut on Aug. 25 but returned to the injured list after only two appearances due to left lat inflammation.

Quintana has pitched in six innings and allowed four earned runs with nine strikeouts this summer.

The Cubs began Monday at 31-22 and are 3.5 games ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals atop the National League Central division.
