Things looked bleak when the Kansas City Royals were forced to place rotational aces Cole Ragans and Seth Lugo on the injured list.
But that was before fans realized what the Royals had in rookie starter Noah Cameron.
Through his first 4 major league starts, Cameron is 2-1 with an impeccable ERA of 1.05, as well as an outstanding 0.818 WHIP.
Cameron even cracked a list of American League Rookie of the Year candidates released by FOX Sports on May 30, with +5500 odds and climbing.
Earlier in the day, on May 30, The Athletic's MLB insider Ken Rosenthal praised Cameron within a larger article, giving him an entire section of recognition.
"He isn't Tarik Skubal throwing 102.6 mph in the final pitch of a Maddux or Paul Skenes competing for a Cy Young Award in his first full season. But Kansas City Royals rookie left-hander Noah Cameron has achieved a rare feat of his own, becoming only the second pitcher since 1893 to work at least 6 1/3 innings and allow one run or fewer in his first four major-league starts," the insider noted.
Continuing: "Cameron's sample might be small, but in an era of diminishing workloads, Zack Wheeler and Max Fried are the only current starters averaging 6 1/3 innings."
Unfortunately, as Rosenthal pointed out, there's no guarantee Cameron will stick with the Royals' MLB roster despite his record-tying start.
"Righty Seth Lugo is expected to come off the injured list Friday and lefty Cole Ragans one week later," Rosenthal explained. Adding: "With lefty Kris Bubic mounting an All-Star bid and righty Michael Wacha delivering his usual quality performance, the Royals can either move righty Michael Lorenzen to the bullpen to clear a spot, or return Cameron to the minors."
Kansas City could also roll with a six-man rotation for a spell, as Lugo and Ragans work their way back to full strength.
It remains to be seen what will become of the dark horse rookie of the year candidate, but no one can say Cameron hasn't earned his keep.
