Jo Adell launched his 35th homer and Travis d’Arnaud delivered a go-ahead RBI double in the eighth inning as the Los Angeles Angels edged the Oakland Athletics 4-3 on Sunday, avoiding a sweep.
The decisive rally began when Chris Taylor worked a one-out walk against reliever Osvaldo Bido (2-5). A pitch then hit Oswald Peraza — the fifth Angel plunked in the game, setting a franchise record — before d’Arnaud, who had entered for injured catcher Logan O’Hoppe, ripped a ground-rule double to right-center to give Los Angeles the lead.
Reid Detmers (5-3) earned the win despite allowing the A’s to tie it briefly in the top of the eighth, and Kenley Jansen closed with a perfect ninth for his 26th save.
Rookie left-hander Mitch Farris, making his second career start, allowed two runs on three hits across six innings for the Angels. Oakland’s Luis Severino went five innings, giving up three runs on four hits.
O’Hoppe left the game in the seventh after taking an accidental backswing from A’s shortstop Jacob Wilson to the chin.
With two on and one out in the seventh, A’s pinch-hitter Carlos Cortes grounded into a 4-6-3 double play started by Taylor, allowing the Angels to preserve a 3-2 lead.
Adell is scorching hot, batting .347 with 10 homers and 22 RBI over his last 20 games. He’s hit four go-ahead home runs in just seven September contests. He exited in the ninth Sunday due to nausea.
Oakland heads to Sacramento Monday with Luis Morales (3-0, 1.59 ERA) set to face Boston’s Garrett Crochet (14-5, 2.67 ERA). The Angels return home, where Caden Dana (0-0, 4.91 ERA) will take on Minnesota’s Simeon Woods Richardson (5-4, 4.53 ERA).
