Dave Dombrowski's Latest Comments Don't Sound Great for Kyle Schwarber's Future with Phillies

There's a possibility that the Philadelphia Phillies could lose Kyle Schwarber in the offseason.

Schwarber, one of the better power hitters in Major League Baseball, is having another great season. He's currently hitting at .247 with 24 home runs and 55 RBIs, posting a 148 OPS+.

However, the tough reality is that the Phillies could potentially lose him for nothing in free agency this upcoming winter. The Phillies would love to get something back for him in return, but there's no chance they'll trade him over the next few months, as it wouldn't make sense given where the team stands as contenders.

As long as the Phillies understand that there's a chance to lose him, which they do, they should have some sort of sense in finalizing a deal.

According to Dave Dombrowski, he wants to keep him around, but added that he has to focus on making his team as good as possible in every avenue.

“We don’t want to lose him,” Dombrowski told FOX’s Deesha Thosar. “But I think your responsibility, as somebody in my job, is to make your club better in other ways. I’ve lost free-agent players in the past that we’ve gone out and been able to do things. Again, not that you want to lose him. But I don’t think it’s the end of any window or anything.”

These aren't exactly ideal comments from Dombrowski, but he's being real about the situation. It's possible that the Phillies will lose him at the end of the year, and there's even a chance it could make sense to do so.

If the Phillies have an opportunity to land a player like Kyle Tucker, he's younger and, frankly, a lot better. However, if they lose him and fail to replace him with a competent player, it'd be tough to justify Dombrowski’s actions.
