Dbacks Eduardo Rodriguez due for dominant year after Spring Training

The Arizona Diamondbacks starting rotation is one the best in the MLB. Their top three pitchers being Cy Young winners and All-Stars in right-handers Corbin Burnes, Zac Gallen, and Merrill Kelly. However, a wildcard for the franchise is left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez. The 31-year-old signed with Arizona last year, and his first season with the Dbacks was plagued with injuries, causing him to have a down year: 3-4, 50 IP, 5.04 ERA, and 47 strikeouts. The offseason has allowed Rodriguez to get healthy and settled in the Valley. The time off has rejuvenated the left-hander as he has dominated Spring Training.

In two Spring Training starts, Rodriguez hasn’t allowed a run in 5.2 innings with seven strikeouts, six of which came on Friday’s start. Rodriguez started against the Cincinnati Reds and pitched a perfect 3.2 innings, not allowing a single baserunner. When Dbacks manager Torey Lovullo came out to pull the left-hander, Rodriguez was fired up, wanting to stay in the game. However, Lovullo is the “boss,” so whatever he says goes, but Rodriguez was motivated by the outing.

Rodriguez on his Friday start:

“One of those days that you don’t want to come off of the mound…It’s like everything that I was throwing was just going right where I want it. I just want to keep that mentality and go for my next game and for the season.”

During his nine-year career, Rodriguez had never had an ERA above 5.00 until last year. The injuries sabotaged his first year and Arizona, but he is determined not to repeat. Before signing with the Diamondbacks, Rodriguez was coming off a 13-9 season with a 3.30 ERA in 26 starts and the lowest WHIP of his career.

Rodriguez still has gas in the tank and is illustrating that with his stellar Spring Training. If he can continue this production, Rodriguez enhance Arizona’s rotation to unhittable.
