Derek Jeter may have been the face of the New York Yankees for two decades, but that doesn't mean he'll defend them every day of his life.
After starting off the 2025 season with a ton of promise, the Yankees have completely unraveled. They're currently in third place in the AL East standings at 60-51. Fans were hoping they'd turn the corner after a busy trade deadline, but that hasn't been the case.
On Friday night, New York's bullpen blew a 9-4 lead to the Miami Marlins. The very next day, the Yankees made a plethora of mental errors in a 3-1 loss. Trent Grisham and Jazz Chisholm Jr. had costly mistakes on the basepaths Saturday.
Jeter offered his thoughts on the Yankees during FOX's coverage of the Speedway Classic on Saturday. The Hall of Famer wasn't willing to give Aaron Boone's squad a pass for its two-game losing streak.
"They make way too many mistakes," Jeter said. "And you can’t get away with making that number of mistakes against great teams. It just doesn’t happen. They had baserunning mistakes today – you saw [Trent Grisham] getting thrown out at home plate. You can’t continue to do it. You have to clean it up."
Jeter wasn't done criticizing his former team.
"There are no excuses. You have to play better," the five-time World Series champion continued. "If you don’t play better, you are not going to go very far."
Former Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez also chimed in during FOX's coverage on Saturday. He said, "I see mistake after mistake, and there’s no consequences."
Speaking to reporters this weekend, Boone addressed Jeter and Rodriguez's comments.
"I would disagree a little bit with the accountability factor, but the reality is, we’re focused every day on being the best we can be," Boone said. "That’s how we have to do it. But I understand when it doesn’t happen, or we don’t have the record that I think we should have, or certainly people think we should have – that comes with the territory."
We'll see if the Yankees can bounce back from their latest skid.
