Detroit Tigers Acquire Two Relievers

The Detroit Tigers today address their bullpen. Last night, they acquired Rafael Montero from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for Jim Jarvis. Today, they acquired right-handed pitcher Paul Sewald from the Cleveland Guardians. Cleveland will receive either a player to be named later or cash in return. Montero this season has pitched for the Braves and the Houston Astros. In 39 games, he is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA, a 1.38 WHIP, and 39 strikeouts in 38.1 innings. Sewald this season in 18 games is 1-1 with two saves, a 4.70 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP, and 18 strikeouts in 15.1 innings. He’s on the injured list with a shoulder strain but expects to return by early September. The Tigers’ bullpen this season ranks 20th in ERA with a 4.16, 20th in FIP with a 4.14, and 13th in WHIP with a 1.29. The Tigers also designated Matt Manning for assignment following the trades.

Rafael Montero

Montero is in his 11th season. In 360 career appearances, he is 22-29 with a 4.76 ERA, a 1.46 WHIP, and 498 strikeouts in 500.2 innings. He has pitched for the New York Mets, Texas Rangers, Seattle Mariners, Houston Astros, and Atlanta Braves.

Paul Sewald

Sewald is in his ninth big league season. He has previously pitched for the New York Mets, Seattle Mariners, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Cleveland Guardians. In 377 games, he is 21-26 with a 4.11 ERA, a 1.15 WHIP, and 468 strikeouts in 391.2 innings.
