The Detroit Tigers battled the Washington Nationals in Game 1 of their double header at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. Wednesday in hopes of improving their stellar, 53-32 record, which ranks just behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for best in Major League Baseball.
Detroit went with Tyler Holton as their starting pitcher for Game 1 of the series and he was given plenty of help in the first inning as the Tigers put six runs on the board on seven hits against Washington starter Trevor Williams.
The day started off with several injury updates that were shared by the Tigers as they prepared for an important series leading up to the 2025 MLB All-Star Break.
Starting pitcher Reese Olson was included in the latest news as the Tigers made an announcement on his expected comeback from an injury.
According to Detroit News reporter Chris McCosky, who cited Tigers manager AJ Hinch, Olson is expected back soon from a finger injury and could start as soon as this Friday in Cleveland against the Guardians, the Tigers' AL Central rivals to whom they lost in the MLB Playoffs last season.
Olson has not pitched with the Tigers since mid-May. He threw 74 pitches in four innings of work with Triple-A Toledo during a recent rehab start and has posted a 4-3 record this season with the Tigers including an ERA of 2.96 with 51 strikeouts.
The Tigers entered the day with a 3.44 ERA ranking third in Major League baseball, along with a WHIP of 1.18, ranking second.
