The Detroit Tigers start a four-game series tonight against the Los Angeles Angels. Casey Mize gets the ball for Detroit as he will be opposed by Yusei Kikuchi for the Angels. Ahead of tonight’s game, the Tigers announced they are designating Kenta Maeda for assignment. The Tigers also recalled Tyler Owens from Triple-A Toledo. This season, in seven games, Maeda is posting a 7.88 ERA, a 1.88 WHIP, and eight strikeouts in eight innings. Owens, in 12 appearances this season, is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA, a 1.79 WHIP, and 11 strikeouts in 14 innings.

Maeda’s Tigers tenure has been a rough go. He was a starter in 2024 before being demoted to the bullpen. In 29 appearances with 17 of those coming as starts last season, he went 3-7 with a 6.09 ERA, a 1.38 WHIP, and 96 strikeouts in 112.1 innings. He also made one start at Triple-A Toledo, going three innings, giving up one run on three hits. He didn’t issue any walks and struck out six.
Owens was acquired from the Rangers last season. In 13 appearances at Double-A Erie last season, he went 1-3 with a 4.41 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP, and 20 strikeouts in 16.1 innings.
