Detroit Tigers Starting Pitcher Tarik Skubal is arguably the best pitcher in Major League Baseball. He has added to his resume with a great first half of the regular season. He has the highest strikeouts per nine innings(11.4) and lowest walks per nine innings(1.2) in the league this season.
Skubal will look to become the first pitcher in history to finish a season leading qualified pitchers in both categories. He is third in the league in wins, third in ERA, third in strikeouts, and leading the league in WHIP. He also started the 2025 MLB All-Star Game for the American League earlier this week. Will he be able to keep pitching at such a high level?

No pitcher has finished a season leading qualified pitchers in both
(the concept of qualifying for pitchers begins 1912 in NL, 1913 in AL when ER and thus ERA official)

Skubal debuted with the Detroit Tigers in 2020. He started showing flashes of the pitcher he would become during the 20223 season. He built on it with a 2024 season for the ages. He won the “pitching triple crown” and the AL Cy Young Award. The star lefty has followed up 2024 by pitching even better this season.
Skubal’s first start of the second half will come on Sunday at home against the Texas Rangers. If the Detroit ace can continue faring this well on the mound, a second straight Cy Young Award could be on the horizon.
