Detroit Tigers to Lose Previously Valuable Contributors to Free Agency
USA TODAY Sports

As the offseason gets going, the Detroit Tigers are set to lose a pair of previously valuable pitchers.

Per Chris McCoskey, Tigers Insider on social media:

Per MLB transactions, RHP Jose Cisnero has elected free agency. Tigers activated LHP Matthew Boyd off the 60-day IL.

The activation of Boyd is a formality as he heads to free agency. He underwent Tommy John surgery this year and likely won't pitch in 2024. He could end up with a multi-year deal that allows him to spend the year rehabbing.

Boyd struggled in 2023 prior to the injury, going 5-5 with a 5.45 ERA in 15 starts. It was a reunion year for him in Detroit after having spent 2015-2021 in the Motor City. He's also pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays (2014-15) and the Seattle Mariners (2022). Lifetime, he's 44-67 with a 4.94 ERA. He's made 160 career starts out of 174 appearances.

The 34-year-old Cisnero went 3-4 this season with a 5.31 ERA, which was a major deviation from his career ERA of 3.99. Lifetime, he's 13-17 over 255 games. He's had an ERA under 4.00 in each year from 2019-2022 so he should find another opportunity elsewhere in 2024.

The Tigers will continue the re-making of their roster this offseason, looking to improve upon a second-place finish in the American League Central. Given the mediocre nature of the division as a whole, there is a chance to make up further ground and make a run at the playoffs in 2024.

Furthermore, Detroit has young players like Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene, which give fans reason for optimism.
