There were a few controversial moments during the New York Yankees-Houston Astros game on Tuesday. One of them was the ejection of Devin Williams. The Yankees’ relief pitcher would throw shade at home plate umpire Brian Walsh after he received his first career ejection.

Williams entered the game in the bottom of the 8th inning with the game tied at 4-4. The former Milwaukee Brewers reliever would give up a double to Carlos Correa and then load up the bases by walking Christian Walker.

He would then give up another walk to Taylor Trammell. With the bases loaded, this led to the Astros taking a 5-4 lead. Williams would then be taken out of the game. As he walked away from the mound, he would have some words with umpire Walsh.

This argument led to him being ejected from the game. Moments later, manager Aaron Boone would get into the face of Walsh. He was tossed from the game too, making it the 6th time this year that he had been thrown out of the game.

Things went from bad to worse from there on as Camilo Doval, who came in to relieve Williams, allowed all three runners to score. The Astros ended the inning leading 8-4. Despite a 3-run home run from Cody Bellinger in the top of the ninth inning, the Yankees were unable to turn it around and ended up losing 8-7.

Another controversial moment in this game came at the end. On a 3-2 full count, Jazz Chisholm Jr. was judged to strike out on a pitch that was seemingly out of the strike zone. After the game, Williams would go off on umpire Brian Walsh and throw shade at him for his “ridiculous” calls.

I already looked at [the replays]. [Walsh] definitely missed four [pitches], and I told him, and he threw me out for it. It’s just ridiculous to have the inning that I had and then Jazz got the bat taken out of his hands on a pitch that was a lot further from the zone than pitches I was making.

Devin Williams told the reporters

Devin Williams was once again credited with the loss. The 2-time All-Star has struggled with form and has been inconsistent throughout the year. He now has a 3-6 record with a 5.60 ERA.

Aaron Boone comments on calls from the umpire following heated words from Devin Williams and Jazz Chisholm Jr.

The New York Yankees did not like the calls from Brian Walsh behind the plate. While Jazz Chisholm Jr. took to his social media account to vent his frustrations, Devin Williams did not hold back in the press conference after the game. Aaron Boone would also make some comments and claimed that some of the calls were inconsistent.

The Yankees manager, however, did claim that his team did have the lead and tipped his hat to the Houston Astros for making an incredible comeback.

I thought it was maybe a little inconsistent. This is more we had a lead, had a couple of chances to add on and the Astros put some good at-bats together. They were squaring up good pitches against us in the second half of the game. Outlasted us.

Aaron Boone said

The loss in this game brought an end to a 8-game winning run in Houston. Since 2023, the Yankees had won 8 games against the Astros in their stadium and were looking to make it 9 wins on the trot on Wednesday.

The two American League rivals will look to close out the series with a win on Thursday. Following that, they will face the Toronto Blue Jays, who are 3.5 games ahead of them. The Bronx Bombers have a 3-7 record against the Canadian outfit this year.

Following that, they will take on the AL Central leaders, the Detroit Tigers, before facing the Boston Red Sox for the final time in the regular season this year.
