Seeing longtime first baseman Christian Walker sign with the Houston Astros a few weeks ago, the Arizona Diamondbacks have completed a trade with the Astros for one of their infielders.
Making the deal official, the D-backs announced that they acquired infielder Grae Kessinger from the Astros for minor league pitcher Matthew Linskey. Arizona’s 40-man roster has 38 players with the addition of Kessinger and two open spots left with Spring Training looming.

Kessinger, a Mississippi native, was a second-round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft by Houston. He split the last two seasons between the MLB and the minors, playing 49 games for the Astros.
For Houston, he hit 8-for-61 for a .131 average, two doubles and one home run. Kessinger made Houston’s Opening Day roster but did not have a single hit last season.
Being able to play anywhere in the infield, Kessinger appeared at first base, second base, third base and shortstop during his stint in the majors this past year. With utility Kevin Newman joining the Los Angeles Angels, the Diamondbacks hope Kessinger provides the same reliable defense.
As for Linskey, he was drafted by Arizona in the 16th round of the 2023 MLB June Amateur Draft.
Out of Rice University, Linskey played last season for High-A Hillsboro, Low-A Visalia and the Arizona Complex League. The 6-foot-7 right-handed pitcher owned a 1-1 record with a 2.78 ERA, 51 strikeouts and 16 walks in 31.2 innings pitched.
Traded to the Astros, Linskey will be returning home to Texas as he is from the city of Humble.
