In preparation for Gabriel Moreno’s return from the IL next week, the Arizona Diamondbacks have designated catcher Tucker Barnhart for assignment, according to Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic.

The Diamondbacks signed Barnhart on January 11th, and the veteran made the Opening Day roster. However, with limited playing time, he has struggled to find his rhythm at the plate.
In 79 at-bats, Barnhart posted a .165 batting average and a .190 slugging percentage. The two-time Gold Glover threw out four baserunners but also allowed 13 stolen bases.
With Barnhart’s departure, the Diamondbacks will have Jose Herrera serving as their backup catcher. Gabriel Moreno is expected to rejoin the team ahead of their series against the Dodgers on Tuesday.
Herra was recalled from Triple-A last week when Moreno initially went to the IL with a sprained left thumb.
Additionally, Nick Piecoro reports that the emergence of Adrian Del Castillo influenced Arizona’s decision. Switching between the roles of designated hitter and starting catcher, Del Castillo has posted a .333 batting average, hit 14 home runs, and driven in 47 runs with the Reno Aces.
