On the Burns & Gambo show, Diamondbacks’ manager Torey Lovullo provided injury updates on several players, noting that Arizona has seen promising developments from some of their key names currently on the injured list.
Starting with Eduardo Rodriguez, Lovullo noted that the tall left-hander recently began a throwing program. He mentioned that the Diamondbacks are actually having to hold Rodriguez back, as he is eager to return to the field. Rodriguez is currently throwing from a distance of 60 feet.
In December, the Diamondbacks signed Eduardo Rodríguez to a four-year deal to stabilize the middle of their rotation. However, injuries have prevented the veteran from making his debut in a D-backs uniform.
Regarding Merrill Kelly, Lovullo mentioned that although he has not started his throwing program, he received positive results from several MRIs he underwent this week. The Diamondbacks are still evaluating the extent of Kelly’s healing, and there is no exact timetable for when he will begin the initial steps of a throwing program.
Next up are Geraldo Perdomo and Alek Thomas, who, as Lovullo confirmed, are making good progress. Perdomo, in particular, is “extremely close” to returning, having recently completed groundball and baserunning drills. He tore the meniscus in his right knee on April 3rd and had a meniscectomy three weeks ago. According to the Cleveland Clinic, the usual recovery time from a meniscectomy is six to eight weeks, which means he is expected to return within the next seven days.
On the other hand, Alek Thomas is not on the same timeline as Perdomo but is currently working on a jogging program. As Lovullo put it, “We’re betting that it is probably going to be Perdomo first and then AT second.”
