Diamondbacks' Madison Bumgarner has shoulder inflammation but may avoid IL

Arizona Diamondbacks left-handed starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner left Wednesday's loss to the New York Mets after two innings of work and underwent an MRI Thursday. The scan showed left shoulder inflammation, per ESPN and Arizona Sports 98.7 FM, but manager Torey Lovullo told reporters Thursday the veteran southpaw may avoid a stint on the injured list. 

"He’s gonna not throw for a couple days and we’re hopeful that this is going to be a quick flip," Lovullo explained. "That’s the discussions that I had with the medical team today." 

Bumgarner surrendered five earned runs on eight hits in two innings against the Mets and said after the game he started feeling discomfort in his shoulder a few weeks ago. He admitted not telling Lovullo and others on the staff about the issue was "bad judgment," and added his shoulder got worse "the last three to four days." 

Bumgarner is a four-time All-Star and three-time World Series champion who was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2014 Fall Classic. He's 4-5 with a 5.73 ERA in 12 starts and 14 appearances this season.
