The Arizona Diamondbacks made a critical bullpen adjustment Wednesday, placing right-handed reliever Ryan Thompson on the 15-day injured list while recalling left-handed pitcher Phillip Abner from Triple-A Reno.
Arizona Sports 98.7 insider John Gambadoro first reported the roster moves ahead of the club's next regular-season matchup. The transaction temporarily removes one of Arizona's most frequently used relievers as the Diamondbacks continue their postseason push.
The Diamondbacks entered the day with a 60-54 record, sitting second in the National League West while holding a National League Wild Card playoff position.
Hearing that corresponding move will be reliever Ryan Thompson to the IL. https://t.co/T7Gh2mHh2W

Thompson has been a workhorse in Arizona's bullpen this season. The veteran right-hander owns a 4-2 record with a 4.42 ERA across 46 relief appearances, logging 40 2/3 innings with 29 strikeouts, 10 walks and a 1.57 WHIP. He is coming off a difficult outing against the San Diego Padres in which he allowed one earned run while recording just one out before landing on the injured list.
Abner returns to provide immediate bullpen depth. The 24-year-old rookie has made five major league relief appearances this season, posting a 6.75 ERA over 9 1/3 innings with five strikeouts, six walks and a 1.50 WHIP. His most recent appearance came July 19, when he threw 46 pitches across two innings in a walk-off victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.
The one-for-one move gives Arizona another left-handed option while temporarily subtracting one of its most heavily used relievers. Thompson's absence will require the Diamondbacks to redistribute late-inning responsibilities as they continue battling for postseason positioning.
With the playoff race entering its final stretch, Arizona will lean on its organizational pitching depth to remain in contention. Abner now has another opportunity to establish himself in the major league bullpen while Thompson works toward a return.
