Ahead of their series finale against the Rockies, the Arizona Diamondbacks announced that Alek Thomas has been optioned to Triple-A Reno following a challenging month.
Since returning from the IL on July 2nd, Thomas has struggled, posting a .191 batting average and a .363 slugging percentage. The 24-year-old is currently in a 2-for-16 slump.
Thomas encountered similar struggles at the plate during the beginning of the 2023 season. As a result, he was optioned to Triple-A to find his grove again, which ultimately worked. With the Aces from mid-May to mid-June, Thomas posted a .348 batting average and drove in 31 runs in 26 games. Following this stint in Triple-A, Thomas concluded the season with the Diamondbacks and raised his batting average from .195 to .230.
In response to Thomas being optioned, the Diamondbacks recalled Blaze Alexander. After making Arizona’s Opening Day roster, Alexander hit .259 (41-for-158) before being optioned on June 30th when Geraldo Perdomo returned as the starting shortstop. Alexander started the season strong, holding a .311 batting average entering May.
In Triple-A this season, the 25-year-old shortstop has posted a .252 batting average but has recently found his rhythm, recording hits in 9 of the Aces’ last 10 games.
For the Diamondbacks’ series finale, Blaze will be playing second base as the team manages Ketel Marte’s absence due to an ankle injury. While Marte is not expected to go on the IL, he is currently listed as day-to-day with a low-grade ankle sprain.
The Diamondbacks are aiming for a sweep over the Colorado Rockies with Jordan Montgomery on the mound. A victory would bring their winning streak to six games.
