The Diamondbacks Communications department sent out a group of roster moves yesterday.  Five players were activated to the 40-man roster from the 60-day Injured list. As a result, two players needed to be removed from the roster to make room.  The D-backs roster is currently at 40.

RHP Austin Adams and LHP Tyler Gilbert were outrighted off the roster and elected free agency. It's not known at this time if they will resign with the Diamondbacks on minor league deals as non-roster players or if they will end up in other organizations. The latter seems the most likely however.

The five players reinstated are

  •  OF Dominic Fletcher (fractured left index finger)
  • LHP Tommy Henry (left elbow inflammation)
  • RHP Drey Jameson (right ulnar collateral ligament/Tommy John surgery)
  • RHP Corbin Martin (right lat tendon avulsion)
  • RHP Christopher Rodriguez (right shoulder)

Gilbert made his major league debut with the Diamondbacks in 2021, working out of the bullpen for his first three appearances. Famously, he pitched a no-hitter in his first major league start on on August 14th of that year.  That was the highlight of a miserable Diamondbacks season. His remaining five starts were not as successful however, as he posted a 4.61 ERA over the rest of the year.  He worked as a spot starter and reliever in 2022 and got into 11 games in 2023,  throwing 17.1 innings of relief.  The left-hander is 2-7 with a 4.32  ERA 91.2 career innings. Not blessed with swing and miss stuff, (career 6.3 K/9 ratio), he depends on inducing soft contact and throwing strikes.

Adams was signed by the D-backs as a minor league free agent in January 2023, and appeared in 24 games, posting a 5.71 ERA in 17.1 innings. Adams threw his hard slider almost 90% of the time, mixing in the occasional four-seam fastball. While it's a nasty pitch, he struggled with command, typically running out high walk and hit by pitch totals. Adams season ended August 1st when he was hit by a comebacker, fracturing his ankle.

Rodriguez was claimed off waivers by the D-backs on October 30th and has had a slow recovery from shoulder surgery after the 2021 season. Once a promising young arm in the Angels farm system, injuries have kept him off a big league mound for two seasons.
