Diamondbacks should move on from Eugenio Suárez

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks will look to add to their roster in the offseason, but should they consider bringing back third baseman Eugenio Suárez?

The Diamondbacks acquired Suárez from the Seattle Mariners in an offseason trade in 2023, then traded him back to Seattle at this year’s deadline after he became one of the most sought-after players. He finished the regular season with 49 home runs and 118 RBIs.

Re-signing Suárez would help boost morale among Valley fans, as his trade left many upset after he built connections during his short time in the desert. His veteran presence could continue to guide a young team that is beginning to find its place among the best in the league.

However, his numbers beyond the long ball have left much to be desired.

The third baseman hit .228 this season. He struck out 196 times, the fourth most among qualified players in the league. His offense is streaky, as he either delivers clutch hits in bunches or struggles to make contact. Suárez’s defense wasn’t the best, posting a -0.2 DWAR.

Suárez is also turning 35 next year, entering the back end of his career. It’s unknown how age will affect him in the long run, especially if he’s seeking a multi-year contract.

The D-Backs are also already developing some of their younger players to move to the hot corner full-time, like Blaze Alexander and Jordan Lawlar.

While retaining a dynamic player like Suárez is enticing, Arizona needs to approach this consideration with caution. With payroll being cut next year, the team must decide whether to risk what little they’ll have to work with on a veteran third baseman or pursue other free agents who won’t break the bank.

Suárez’s run in the desert won’t be forgotten, but it’s time for the Diamondbacks to let their young prospects begin to shine with full seasons under their belts.
