Diamondbacks should resist reunion with Christian Walker

PHOENIX — The Houston Astros are considering putting first baseman Christian Walker on the trading block, raising the question of whether a reunion with the Arizona Diamondbacks could be on the horizon.

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the former D-Backs first baseman may end up out of Texas in the offseason.

Should the Diamondbacks consider bringing back a familiar face?

Arizona is already in the midst of a roster shakeup. The team is shedding payroll and looking to acquire younger talent, particularly pitchers. Bringing back Walker, with two years and $40 million remaining on his contract, would likely complicate the Diamondbacks’ plans. With rumors that the organization is listening to offers for All-Star Ketel Marte, it’s clear Arizona isn’t looking to take on another hefty contract.

In 2025, he hit .238 with 27 home runs and 88 RBIs, which is respectable. His OPS was around .717, solid but not exceptional for a player with this type of contract.

A potential return might entice fans, as Walker was a fan favorite and key contributor for Arizona in the early 2020s. However, the Diamondbacks have since shaped a new identity.

Many prospects are making their mark at the major league level, including Blaze Alexander and Tim Tawa, who can serve as utility players. The team doesn’t need to rely on superstar talent, as several younger players stepped up in significant ways during the second half of the last season.

Teams are cautious about inheriting large contracts for players who haven’t met expectations and Arizona is no exception.

Bringing back Walker is enticing and would likely please Valley fans. However, it may not be the risk the Diamondbacks should take, especially with younger players stepping into roles that were recently vacated.

Arizona can remain competitive with its current roster and should focus on acquiring younger players who won’t exceed the payroll amount.
