The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired Griff McGarry in a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday. The Phillies announced the deal as receiving international bonus pool space and a player to be named later, or cash considerations.

The Dodgers’ official announcement of the trade was acquiring McGarry from the Phillies in exchange for international bonus pool money. McGarry’s transaction log on his MLB player page notes he was traded to the Dodgers for international pool space and future considerations.

It’s not yet known how much international bonus pool money the Dodgers traded to the Phillies. Though, MLB rules require that to be done in increments of $250,000, unless it is the remainder of a team’s pool and less than $250,000. Earlier this year the Dodgers acquired bonus pool money from the Minnesota Twins for Anthony Banda.

The Dodgers and Phillies both opened the 2026 international free agent period in January with a $6.679 million pool.

In January 2025, the Dodgers traded players to the Cincinnati Reds and Phillies in exchange for international pool space in both deals as they worked to sign Roki Sasaki.

Griff McGarry trade

McGarry joins the Dodgers without having made his MLB debut yet. The right-hander once was a top pitching prospect in the Phillies organization and despite slipping from that, the Washington Nationals selected McGarry in the 2025 Rule 5 Draft.

But the Nationals returned McGarry to the Phillies when he was designated for assignment at the end of Spring Training. He began the season with Triple-A Lehigh Valley and now was assigned to Triple-A Oklahoma City upon getting traded to the Dodgers.

McGarry had a 3.18 ERA over six appearances for the Nationals in the Grapefruit League. He allowed four runs in four innings pitched across five games for the Phillies’ Triple-A affiliate.

Over six Minor League seasons, the 26-year-old is 10-17 with a 4.21 ERA with 424 strikeouts against 209 walks while limiting hitters to a .182 batting average. McGarry was originally drafted by the Phillies out the University of Virginia in the fifth round of the 2021 MLB Draft.

McGarry is not presently on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster, leaving them with one opening. That was created when Grant Holman got designated for assignment and subsequently claimed off waivers by the Detroit Tigers.
