The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired outfielder Steward Berroa from the Toronto Blue Jays for cash considerations.

Berroa was designated for assignment on May 7. He fills the final 40-man roster spot left open when Yoendrys Gómez was designated for assignment and claimed by the Chicago White Sox.

The 25-year-old made his Major League debut in 2024 and hit .189 with six stolen bases in 28 games for the Blue Jays.

Berroa has been in the Blue Jays farm system for eight seasons, slashing .250/.352/.382 with 34 homers and 207 RBI.

He appeared in 26 Triple-A games this season, hitting .195/.267/.234 with 15 runs scored, four RBI and nine stolen bases.

Berroa’s best tool is his speed and he’s stolen more than 40 bases six times at the Minor League levels. He set a career-best 58 stolen bases during the 2021 season.

The switch-hitter has never hit more than 10 home runs in a season, which happened in 2024.

Berroa signed as an international free agent out of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in 2016.

Steward Berroa’s role with Dodgers

Berroa should report to Triple-A and serve as organizational depth. With James Outman and Hyeseong Kim at the Major League level, the Dodgers were likely looking to add a player to fill out their Triple-A roster.

He could see some time at the MLB level with the Dodgers, but that is unlikely to happen for an extended amount of time. He should spend most of his time in the Minors.

If Berroa does get an MLB opportunity in L.A., it would likely come as a bench role and primary pinch-runner.
