The Los Angeles Dodgers have been forced to make a roster move today as they await test results on catcher Will Smith, according to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. Catcher Ben Rortvedt has been called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City, and Los Angeles will carry three catchers until Smith receives a further diagnosis.
Ben Rortvedt is here on taxi as the Dodgers evaluate Will Smith’s status. Dalton Rushing is starting behind the plate today as expected.

In order to make room for Rortvedt on the 40-man and active roster, the Dodgers optioned infielder Alex Freeland, and designated right-handed relief pitcher Alexis Diaz for assignment.
Will Smith was behind the plate last night in Pittsburgh when he was struck on the right hand by a foul ball. He was removed from the game shortly after and taken for X-rays. Those tests came back negative, However, Smith is having a CT scan today in order to determine if the Injured List is necessary. The catcher’s absence will be a blow to an offense that is already struggling. Smith’s walk-off home run on Sunday was one of the bright spots in recent weeks. Manager Dave Roberts said that the All-Star “is unlikely to play” this weekend.
Smith had a wonderful first half this season, leading the league in batting. However, the second half, as in past seasons, he has struggled to maintain his offensive momentum. Smith has maintained that it is something mechanical in his swing and not an injury. It did appear that he had unlocked something in recent days. But now, everything is on hold.
Alex Freeland did more than his fair share defensively for the Dodgers. But he has struggled of late with the bat. His plate appearances have been dominated by strikeouts. Now that Hyeseong Kim has returned from a shoulder injury, the rookie can hone his offensive production in the minors.
Alexis Diaz was acquired by the Dodgers in May, but control problems led to a 9.00 Earned Run Average. His time in Dodger Blue is likely over.
