Dodgers Among Top Teams Eyeing Alex Bregman if He Opts Out

After a high-profile move to the Boston Red Sox last offseason, Alex Bregman is proving he made the right call. The former Houston Astros All-Star turned down a richer, longer offer from the Detroit Tigers to sign with the Red Sox.

He is having his best offensive season in years with a .386 on-base percentage, 11 homers and 17 doubles.

Now 30, Bregman is not only producing at the plate but anchoring a Red Sox team that’s trying to re-establish itself in the American League playoff picture. He is currently in the first year of a deal that pays him $40 million annually through 2027, but he is widely expected to exercise his opt-out clause after the season.

If he does, the third base market could get very competitive. According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, Bregman’s free-agent appeal would likely exceed what it was last offseason, with interest expected from the Yankees, Tigers, Astros, Phillies, and even the Dodgers.

"Bregman, who is making $40 million this year and signed for two more years at that rate, will likely opt out of his deal. His free-agent market should be even more robust than last offseason with the Red Sox joined by the Yankees, Tigers, Astros, Phillies and even the Dodgers; he would be an upgrade for all of them at the hot corner."

Bregman would be an ideal fit at third base for the Dodgers, especially as Max Muncy has struggled at the plate this season. Muncy is batting just .208 and hasn’t provided the consistent power the Dodgers have come to expect. With a $10 million club option for 2026 looming, the team faces a tough decision.

After moving on from Chris Taylor and Austin Barnes, the Dodgers are clearly reshaping their depth chart. Muncy’s continued struggles only increase the urgency for a reliable third baseman, making the potential availability of Bregman even more intriguing for Los Angeles.
