The Los Angeles Dodgers currently have 16 players on the IL (including Ohtani’s status as a pitcher). Mookie Betts is not on this list. However, that might not matter.
Dodgers’ manager, Dave Roberts, issued a discouraging statement on Betts’ fractured toe. When asked about Betts, Roberts said this injury could linger for “quite some time.” The Dodgers’ skipper went on to say this when discussing a possible timeline:
"Probably don’t think that four days versus 14 days or 15 days is going to make much of a difference."
Betts is currently day-to-day, still, his time on the bench sounds like it may last as long as a brief IL stint. Since stubbing the fourth toe on his left foot while at home on Wednesday, Betts has seen action in three games against the Guardians, but when suiting up to face the Yankees on Friday, Betts was scratched from the lineup and has remained on the bench.
In an interview with The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya, Dodgers GM Brandon Gomez offered some insight on what their plan of action is. He had this to say:
“We need to see the doctors and kind of get a better sense of it. It happened pretty recently, so it’ll take some time before we have a better understanding.”
This looks like one of those situations that’s going to take some patience. The 2018 AL MVP and six-time Gold Glove winner is having a down year by his usual standards. So far, Betts is hitting .254/.338/.405 with eight home runs.
