The Los Angeles Dodgers are getting healthier, as today, they activated outfielder-infielder Tommy Edman. To make room for him, they also optioned outfielder Justin Dean to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Dodgers Activate Tommy Edman from Injured List

A Bum Ankle

Unfortunately, Edman has been placed on the injured list multiple times this year for a sprained right ankle. It is the same injury that had plagued him numerous times before he was traded to the Dodgers. The NLCS Most Valuable Player of 2024 has struggled to stay healthy this year, and it has not only affected his versatility but also his offensive output. In his abbreviated season, Edman is hitting for a .228 batting average with 12 home runs. Ironically, the gritty veteran is not typically known for his power, but his big fly numbers are up. In his extended rehab outings, he seems back to his old self, batting close to .285 at Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Where Will He Play?

The Dodgers have to be ecstatic about Edman’s return. He is not only able to play most positions on the diamond, but willing to as well. Case in point, he filled in admirably at third base due to the absences of Kiké Hernández and Max Muncy. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has said that upon his return, he expects Edman to play primarily in center field. If that is the scenario, it would explain why the rehab process took until September. Center fielders are the generals of the outfield and cover a lot of ground. The Dodgers wanted to make sure that Edman’s ankle is fully healed and able to bear the workload.

Loaded for Bear Now?

This is the latest piece of good news for the Dodgers, who are in the fight of their lives for a postseason berth. After all, Alex Vesia, Will Smith, and Max Muncy have all returned to the roster as October approaches. The question is, will it be enough?
