Dodgers Key Free Agent Expected to Choose New Team Shortly
USA TODAY Sports

The Dodgers have been very active all offseason long, adding to its roster with big moves, minor tweaks, and everything in between.

L.A. has managed to re-sign a host of its free agents, including the likes of Jason Heyward, Ryan Brasier and Joe Kelly, among others.

While all of these moves have been positively received, a large chunk of the fan base has been on pins and needles awaiting the decision on popular utility man Kiké Hernández.

Hernández rejoined the team last season after a short stint in Boston with the Red Sox. A highly engaging individual with plenty of energy, he endeared himself to those who bleed Dodger Blue with a million-dollar smile and several timely hits (not to mention a fabulous banana suit).

On Friday evening, MLB.com reporter Mark Feinsand offered an update on Hernández and his free agent status:

While nothing is official, it's unlikely that Hernández will be back with the club. Simply put, there's nowhere for him to play.

Gavin Lux has returned from injury to man the shortstop position. Miguel Rojas is there behind him as a right-handed veteran presence.

Mookie Betts has now moved full-time to play second base in the wake of Los Angeles re-signing Heyward and bringing in both Manuel Margot and Teoscar Hernández.

Lastly, the Dodgers have Chris Taylor functioning as the most talented/versatile utility player in the big leagues. Miguel Vargas is also hanging around as a potential piece to play left field or third base.

Hernández hit .237 last year with 11 home runs and 61 RBIs. After being acquired at the trade deadline by the Dodgers, he hit .262 with five home runs and 30 RBIs.

It's unknown as to where Hernández will sign. The Angels have been rumored as a potential option. He'd be a great fit for any contender looking for a versatile defender with skills to mash left-handed pitching.

Additionally, a non-contender could sign him to a one-year deal with the idea of flipping him to a better squad at the trade deadline.
