Dodgers Make Decision After Max Muncy Injury News

Third baseman Max Muncy is in his tenth major-league season and eighth with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He experienced a career revival after debuting in Dodger blue in 2018, transitioning into a middle-of-the-order threat.

Since joining Los Angeles, Muncy has four seasons of 30-plus home runs, two All-Star selections, and helped power title runs in 2020 and 2024.

Despite a sluggish start in 2025, Muncy erupted in June, posting a 1.113 OPS that ranked second among qualified hitters, trailing only Juan Soto. His power surge supported a star-studded lineup featuring Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman—though both slumped through June.

On July 2 against the Chicago White Sox, however, Muncy sustained a left knee bone bruise in the sixth inning when tagging out Michael A. Taylor. Subsequent imaging confirmed the injury and he was placed on the 10-day injured list, expected to miss approximately six weeks.

While Muncy spends time on the injured list, manager Dave Roberts has opted to start Tommy Edman at third base against right-handed pitchers beginning next week. Against left-handers, Miguel Rojas and Kiké Hernández will split time at the hot corner.

Edman was acquired at last year’s trade deadline for his defensive versatility. After a dominant NLCS MVP performance in 2024 that led the Dodgers to a World Series title, he signed a five-year, $74 million contract extension this past offseason.

Against left-handers, Hernández and Rojas will share third base duties. Both have seen limited action this season—Hernández in 70 games, Rojas in 51—and are eager to make the most of their opportunity in Muncy's absence.
