Dodgers, Padres will reportedly open 2024 season in South Korea

The 2024 Major League Baseball season will reportedly open with a series of games in South Korea.

According to a Sunday report from ESPN, the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres are expected to be the teams to take part. 

It will be the first time Major League Baseball will have regular season games in South Korea, and the eighth time since 1999 that the league will open its season outside of the United States or Canada. 

The league has also played season opening games in Tokyo, Mexico and Australia. It most recently opened its season in Tokyo during the 2019 season.

There are four international games on the schedule this season, but they were not season-opening games. 

The Padres swept a pair of games from the San Francisco Giants in Mexico City back in April, while the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals are set to play a pair of games in London in June. 

There are four players of South Korean descent in the Major Leagues this season, including Padres infielder Ha-Seong Kim.

The ESPN report did not specify where the games would be played or when, but that they would be played early enough to allow the two teams to return back to the United States early enough to be rested for when the rest of the Major League teams open their seasons.
