Blake Snell’s second season as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers has not gone according to plan.
The 33-year-old veteran arrived at spring training dealing with left shoulder inflammation that forced him to begin the year on the 15-day injured list.
He made several rehab starts before officially rejoining the rotation last Saturday. Snell struggled in his first outing back, allowing five runs in just three innings against the Atlanta Braves, but the positive takeaway was that he was finally healthy enough to pitch again. Unfortunately, that may end up being his only start of the first half of the season.
Ahead of what was supposed to be his second start, Snell was scratched, and manager Dave Roberts revealed that he would need surgery to address loose bodies in his left elbow.
Snell officially underwent the procedure on Tuesday. He received a newer type of operation known as a NanoScope procedure, which is designed to shorten recovery time. Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal underwent the same procedure and is expected to return sooner than originally projected.
The details of Snell’s surgery emerged before Tuesday’s game against the San Diego Padres. According to Alden Gonzalez of ESPN, the operation went well and three bone spurs were removed.

I'm told it went well.
The good news is that the surgery was a success. It is unclear when Snell will resume throwing, but Skubal began throwing only days after his procedure.
The Dodgers, however, are known for being cautious with their starting pitchers, so they may take a slower approach with Snell. Still, Snell likely chose this procedure because he wants to return as quickly as possible.
He made only 11 starts in 2025 for Los Angeles, spending time on the 60-day injured list before returning in the second half and helping the Dodgers capture a second straight championship. He clearly does not want that to be the case again this year.
Snell is not the only starter currently sidelined, as Tyler Glasnow is also out with a lower-back injury. The Dodgers have the depth to withstand these losses, but Snell desperately wants to live up to his five-year, $136 million deal with Los Angeles, having made just 12 total starts over the last two seasons.
